Visakhapatnam: A 33-year-old Naval Dockyard employee ended his life after he allegedly lost Rs 15 lakh in online gambling, near Meghadrigedda under Gopalapatnam limits in Vizag city.

Identified as M Sateesh Kumar of Kothapalem, he leaned over a railway track to end his life. Though the incident took place on Saturday, it came to light on Sunday.

The deceased was working as Fitter with Naval Dockyard in Vizag city.

Sub-Inspector of Government Railway Police (GRP), Visakhapatnam T Kamesh said that Kumar was found dead on the railway track on Saturday. His body was shifted to the morgue for autopsy. A case under Section 174 of CrPC was registered and the investigation is on.

Police said that since they didn't recover any suicide note, it is difficult to ascertain the exact reason for the incident. "Though there were some reports that Kumar ended his life after losing money in online games, we need to investigate to find out the reason behind his suicide," he said.

A gambling addict, he had borrowed over Rs 15 lakh from his friends and relatives to play online games.

Kumar's parents had managed to repay some of his debts by selling properties.

It may be recalled that the Andhra Pradesh government banned online rummy in September 2020.
