Vizag: Naval officer dies, another missing at Yarada beach


Visakhapatnam: A naval officer died and another went missing after they were caught in a strong rip current during a cleanup operation at Yarada beach.

According to the New Port police station, the deceased was identified as Petty Officer Whengbam Jagajit Singh. The search operation for missing sailor Subham is underway.

As it was Sunday, a company of `INS Sumitra' of Indian Navy comprising 54 persons came to Yarada beach around 7.30 am.

The incident occurred around 9.15 am and was reported to police around 3 pm after the rescue operation.

Before proceeding to breakfast, Jagajit Singh, Shubham (Com-II), Sunil ( Petty officer), and Vinit Kumar (EEMR-I) ventured into the sea waters for clean up.

However, they got caught in a strong current and dragged into the sea. Two of them managed to survive the tide and also brought Jagajit to the shore. He was unconscious.

The team rushed Jagajit to INHS Kalyani. However, he died at the hospital at around 11 am while undergoing treatment.
