Vijayawada: Thirteen people, including four children, were killed and 13 others injured when a speeding lorry rammed into a tractor trolley near the Vedadri area in Krishna district, Andhra Pradesh, on 17 June. The victims were returning after visiting the famous Sri Yogananda Lakshmi Narasimha Swamy Temple in Vedadri.
The police said that the victims were from Peda Gopavaram village under Madhira mandal in Khammam district, Telangana. Twenty-six people from Madhira had come to offer prayers at Vedadri temple on Tuesday night. They had stayed at the temple for a night and had darshan of the presiding deity on Wednesday morning. They were returning home when the accident occurred. Seven persons were killed on the spot while six others died while they were undergoing treatment at Jaggayyapeta Hospital in Krishna district.
One of the survivors said the tractor, in which the victims were travelling, was hit by a coal-laden lorry coming from the opposite direction.
The Krisha district police said that the victims include women and children. The injured persons are being treated at the government hospital in Jaggayyapeta. At least three injured people are said to be in a critical condition.
The deceased were identified as V. Padmavathi (46), V. Udaysri (6), V. Rajee (27), B. Bharathamma (45), V. Kalyani (16), S. Srilakshmi (19), G. Upendra Reddy (15), G. Satyanarayana Reddy (45), G. Ramanna (40), L. Appappa (42), L. Tirupatamma (62), L. Akkamma, and a few others. The tractor driver was also killed in the accident. The death toll may further increase, the police said.
