A student from Pondicherry University, Ramu, has discovered that taking one tablespoon of black pepper powder mixed with two tablespoons of honey and some ginger juice for five days would cure COVID-19.

Hyderabad: The second wave of COVID-19 has given led to rampant misinformation on social media. Many "home remedies", including inhaling steam and drinking alcohol, have been suggested to either cure or prevent COVID-19. NewsMeter has debunked several such claims. Now, a message doing the rounds of social media is promoting another such remedy.

According to a message in Telugu, a student from Pondicherry University, Ramu, has discovered that taking one tablespoon of black pepper powder mixed with two tablespoons of honey and some ginger juice for five days would cure COVID-19. This is the first time that a home remedy has been accepted by the WHO, the message claims.

Fact Check:

The claim that a Pondicherry student has found a home remedy for COVID-19 is FALSE.

The claim was viral in July 2020 also. Various fact-checking publications reached out to the Pondicherry University to verify the claim. The Vice-Chancellor of Pondicherry University, while speaking to a news portal, denied that a student of the university has found a home remedy for the coronavirus.

On the other hand, the WHO has not recognized any remedy or cure for COVID-19. As of now, experimental treatment drugs such as hydroxychloroquine and favipiravir are being used to potentially cure COVID-19.

The claim has been debunked by PIB Fact Check. PIB posted a tweet on 25 April 2021 stating, "One false claim is being claimed in the news that a student of Pondicherry University #COVID19 Have found home remedies for @WHO It has also been approved by #PIBFactCheck Do not share such confusing messages.#कोविड19 Trust only the official sources for the correct information related to."
