Debt-ridden doctors family commits suicide

Amalapuram: In what is alleged to be a suicide pact, a doctor along with his wife and son committed suicide by injecting poison at their residence at Amalapuram in East Godavari district on Friday.

The deceased were identified as Penmetsa Ramakrishna Raju, 55, his wife P. Lakshmi Devi, 45, and their son P. Krishna Sandeep, 25 also an MBBS graduate.

The police said that Ramakrishna Raju was a popular orthopaedic surgeon and had set up the Krushi Orthopaedic Hospital at Amalapuram. The victim had borrowed money towards the development of his hospital. However, he incurred huge debts due to various reasons.

The police are yet to ascertain the exact reasons for the suicide pact. But they suspect that the family might have taken the extreme step due to their financial condition. There was no suicide note at the spot.

The police shifted the bodies to the government hospital for autopsy and investigation is on to ascertain the exact reasons for the suicides. A case has been registered under Section 174 of CrPC (suspicious death).
