Fearing NRC, people approach GHMC for birth, marriage certificates

Hyderabad: Seemingly fearing NRC, people in Hyderabad are making beelines to GHMC for birth and marriage certificates in order to prove that they are bonafide Indian nationals born and brought up in the city.

Young and old, men and women are approaching GHMC with requests for birth and marriage certificates. Mostly people from the old city are knocking on the doors of GHMC for residential proofs.

Official data reveal that 88 birth certificates were issued to men on January 1, of whom 38 belonged to the old city. On the same day, around 101 certificates were issued to women out of whom 32 belonged to the same ward. This year the number of requests has doubled compared to the corresponding period of last year.

Officials attribute the surge in requests to the CAA and NRC. GHMC officials said they are getting requests from people who were born between 1936 and 1945. The officials were also surprised when an 86 year old applied for a birth certificate

Officials said they are trying hard to find out the records which date back to pre-independence and Nizam era. Officials said they are unable to trace out the records of 99% of the applicants.

Their requests have been sent to RTO and police for further inquiry.

Waqf board officials said they have witnessed a sharp increase in requests for birth and marriage certificates. Last year they were getting 100 to 150 requests, but from January, they are receiving 450 to500 requests per day.
