Hyderabad: Gutkha smugglers, in the guise of mediapersons, were caught at Medipally on the outskirts of Hyderabad. Police nabbed one person running the racket and seized the banned gutkha and other tobacco products from his possession.

According to sources, Khader Khan, a resident of West Marredpally, was involved in smuggling the contraband. As there is a ban on pan and other petty shops which sell gutkha due to the lockdown, he thought of making some money by supplying gutkha to the needy directly.

As he could not get any permission for his vehicles through illegal means, he prepared stickers of various media houses and pasted them on his car. Further, he also procured a camera to make the police believe that he is a mediaperson to roam around in the city.

He had stickers in the name of Swathi News and also a logo on the same name. He began manufacturing gutkha at a rented place in Chengicherla area and supplied the product across the city. Police found that whenever his vehicle had to pass a check post, he showed the channel logo and camera.

Sensing something suspicious, police detained him and seized the gutkha and raw material worth '15 lakh from the rented place. Further, the place was also sealed for further investigation.
