In-laws who harassed woman for dowry get one-year jail

Hyderabad: A local Hyderabad court, on 1 July, sentenced two people to one-year imprisonment in connection with a dowry harassment case. The court also slapped a fine of Rs. 5,000 each.

Anisha Atluri had filed a complaint at the Kushiguda police station claiming that she had given Rs. 50 lakhs and gold ornaments worth Rs. 50 lakhs as dowry when she married her husband Sri Krishna on 4 March 2015. After the marriage, she had moved to Vijayawada to live with her in-laws.

She alleged that her in-laws tortured and harassed her claiming that she had not brought enough dowry. If their son had married another woman they would have received more than Rs. 1 crore as dowry, they told her. Later, Anisha moved to Switzerland where her husband was working but the torture did not stop as he continued to harass her. Sri Krishna also suspected Anisha of infidelity and occasionally beat her and abused her.

Anisha had informed her parents of the harassment she faced at the hands of her in-laws but her father had expressed his inability to pay Rs. 25 lakhs within such a short time. Her in-laws forced her to withdraw Rs. 10 lakhs that had been deposited on her name.

On Wednesday, the court sentenced Anisha's in-laws to one-year imprisonment.
