Kalvakuntla Kavitha wins Nizamabad MLC polls, secures 728 votes

Hyderabad: Kalvakuntla Kavitha, former Nizamabad Lok Sabha member and daughter of Telangana Chief Minister K Chandrasekhar Rao won the Nizamabad local bodies Legislative Council seat by defeating BJP and Congress with a huge margin.

Kavitha secured 728 votes, while BJP polled 56 votes. Congress stood third securing 29 votes. Both Congress and BJP failed to retain their deposits.

The Electoral College for the seat comprised the representatives of local bodies in undivided Nizamabad district. They include MPTCs, ZPTCs, Councilors, Corporations and Ex-officio members.

The election for by-poll was held on October 9 and counting of votes was held on Monday.

The original strength of TRS in the local bodies is 494. It is followed by Congress with 140 members, BJP 84, AIMIM 28, independents 66 and others 12.

AIMIM, independents, and others had extended support to Kavitha.

Kavitha votes exceeded the cumulative strength of 600, signaling cross-voting by other parties in her favour. She secured 728 votes, 128 votes more than expected.

Congress should have got 140 votes as per its strength, but it secured just 29 indicating that 80 percent of its voters voted for TRS.

Similarly, BJP should have got 84 votes, but it secured just 56.

TRS' victory was a foregone conclusion even before the election notification given its numbers. What was though shocking was that Congress and BJP could not keep their flock together.

More than the defeat, what was more humiliating to Congress and BJP was their voters voted for TRS.
