Ramagundam Task Force busts smugglers gang, nabs three for selling Buddha statue

Mancherial: Ramagundam commissionerate Task Force sleuths busted a smugglers gang and arrested three persons for trying to sell an antique statue of Buddha at Chennur in the Mancherial district.

Weighing around six kilograms, the statue is valued at Rs 30 lakhs in the grey market, police said.

Acting on a tip-off, the Task Force sleuths cordoned off the bus stand area in the Chennur town. However, one of the four suspects gave them a slip and melted away in the crowd. Sleuths later managed to nab the three members of the gang.

The sleuths recovered an ancient statue of Buddha from their possession. During interrogation, the trio confessed to having procured the statue from agents. They told the investigators that they were trying to sell it to the prospective buyers.

Police suspect that they had procured the statue from a village on the state border. Police are also probing the gang members’ links with other crime syndicates that have been busted in the past.
