Annapurna College of Film and Media recently hosted an inspiring masterclass by National Award winning Sound Recordist & Designer Mr. Mandar Kamalapurkar, offering students an opportunity to engage with the artistic and aesthetic dimensions of sound in cinema.

Drawing from his extensive experience in Indian filmmaking, Mandar focused on how sound contributes to storytelling beyond its technical role.
During the session, he discussed the aesthetics of sound design, illustrating his ideas with examples from several films he has worked on.
By breaking down specific scenes, he demonstrated how carefully crafted sound choices, ranging from ambiences, sound effects and silence to environmental textures, express the psychological contours of a character and construct the narrative of a film.
His insights highlighted how sound can subtly guide the audience’s perception and deepen the realism of cinematic moments.
