Hyderabad: On Sunday, a Yeti Airlines flight with 72 people on board from Kathmandu to the tourist town of Pokhara in Nepal crashed before catching fire. According to NDTV, at least 68 of the passengers lost their lives.

Indian media outlets reported the mishap using a photo of a plane crash, suggesting that it shows the recent crash in Nepal.

ANI, India Today, Mirror Now, and DNA shared the image in their tweets about the crash.

Fact Check

NewsMeter found that the photo does show the plane crash in Nepal but dates back to 2012.

On performing a reverse image search of the photo, we found it on Reuters from 2012. According to the caption, the photo shows the wreckage of a Dornier aircraft from the crash site in Kathmandu which happened in 2012.


We also found the image in a report published by The Indian Express on 29 September 2012. It said a twin-engine propeller plane carrying 19 people had crashed outside Katmandu, Nepal. There were no survivors.

The crash was also reported by International Business Times in 2012. The report carried several images of the accident.

It is evident that the photo dates back to 2012. Hence, we conclude that a photo of a 2012 crash has been shared as the recent plane crash in Nepal.
