Hyderabad: A video which shows an angry player lift and throw a referee into a basketball hoop is doing the rounds on social media. People sharing the video are claiming that it is from a women’s basketball game between Russia and France.

NewsMeter found that the video is from a film.

On performing a reverse image search of the video on Yandex, we found the video is from a 1981 Russian film ā€˜Eighth wonder of the world.’

Taking a cue from this, we searched for the film on YouTube. A YouTube channel had uploaded the film on 3 January 2017. The viral clip appears at around the 33.36-minute mark. A player throws the referee into the hoop and receives applause from the audience.

Finally, we ran a keyword search about the film on Google and found that it was released in 1981. The story is about Soviet basketball players who participate in international competitions for the Hera Cup. It was directed by Samson Samsonov and written by Vladimir Kapitanovsky.

It is evident that the viral video is from a 1981 Russian film. Hence, we conclude that the video does not show a real incident, and the claim is false.
