Weather Alert: Telangana braces for heat wave, thunderstorms; IMD cautions

Hyderabad: As the India Meteorological Department (IMD) issued a heat wave alert for Telangana, including Hyderabad, followed by a rain and thunderstorm warning, residents are urged to adhere to precautionary measures to safeguard themselves against the dual challenges of extreme heat and rainy weather. Government of Telangana has issued advisory for precautions against heatwave and also the change in weather due to thunderstorms.

Precautions against heat wave

The statement from the government stressed the importance of staying hydrated and covered during the heat wave.

Dr Anjali Kumar, a dermatologist in Hyderabad, emphasised the importance of staying hydrated and covered during the heat wave. She advised, “Drink sufficient water regularly, even if not thirsty, and wear thin, loose cotton garments. Covering the head with an umbrella or hat provides crucial protection from direct sunlight.”

Dr Priya Reddy, a general physician at Apollo Healthcare, underscored the significance of staying informed about local weather updates. She stated, “Staying alert through various mediums such as radio, television, newspapers, and the IMD website is essential during a heat wave.”

Special attention is required for vulnerable groups, as highlighted by Dr Krishna Rao, a community health specialist. “Infants, outdoor workers, pregnant women, individuals with mental or physical illnesses, and the elderly need extra caution and care during extreme heat,” he said.

Rain and thunderstorm precautions

In light of the rain and thunderstorm warning issued by the IMD, residents are urged to take necessary precautions to minimise risks.

Dr Ramesh Singh, a sports medicine specialist at Yashoda Hospital, Hyderabad, advised against engaging in strenuous activities during hot weather. “Avoid outdoor activities, especially between 12 noon and 3 pm, when the sun’s intensity is at its peak,” he recommended.

Dr Rekha Patel, a podiatrist, warned against barefoot walking during rain and thunderstorms to prevent burns and discomfort due to hot surfaces.

Recognising the danger signs

Dr Prakash Joshi, an emergency physician at Apollo Healthcare, elaborated on the importance of recognising danger signs and seeking immediate medical attention if any symptoms such as altered mental state, high body temperature, headache, weakness, or rapid heartbeat are observed.

“Proactive adherence to these guidelines is crucial for minimising the impact of heat waves and inclement weather on health and well-being. The government’s efforts in providing necessary medical facilities and awareness campaigns are commendable, but individual responsibility and preparedness remain paramount in combating the challenges posed by extreme weather conditions. Stay informed, stay hydrated, and stay safe during this period of fluctuating weather in Hyderabad,” concluded Dr Joshi.
