Hyderabad: Several NGOs have come together to help people affected by the heavy rains and floods that wreaked havoc in Hyderabad. A group of 10 NGOs and organisations have formed the Flood Relief Coalition which is distributing clothes and blankets to flood-affected people in the city.

A Flood Relief Coalition hamper consists of a bedsheet, a blanket, clothing for men, women, and kids, toothpaste, toothbrush, towels, and soaps.

The group has donated around 1,500 hampers so far and is planning to give 3,000 per day in the coming days. “When we started, we thought of donating 1,000 hampers but now more people are turning up to donate clothes and other items. We are planning to donate around 20,000 hampers to families in the flood-affected area,” said Ayesha Rubina, GHMC Corporator and founder of the Ayesha Foundation.

The coalition includes NGOs like Ayesha Foundation, SDF Foundation, Goonj Foundation, SBM Foundation, and Access Foundation. Brands like Dettol and Colgate are collaborating with the NGOs and donating products for the relief work.

“We are looking for more clothes and things which people need rather than monetary help. If people are coming to help us with money we instead ask them to buy something which people need,” said Ayesha.

The group has five sorting centres in Banjara Hills, Madhapur, Secunderabad, Kukatpally, and Himayat Nagar. People can donate clothes at these centres.

To identify needy families, volunteers survey the affected area. “After identifying and making a list of people and families who need help, we send them the hampers the next day,” said Ayesha.
