13YO Dalit girl, who was set ablaze for resisting rape, succumbs at Hyderabad

Khammam: The 13-year-old Dalit girl from Khammam, who was set ablaze after she resisted a rape attempt at her employer's residence, succumbed to her injuries at Rainbow Hospital, Banjara Hills on Thursday.

The girl had suffered seventy percent burns. The girl was set ablaze after she resisted a rape attempt by her employer's son at his residence.

Khammam police have already arrested the accused. He has been identified as Allam Maraiah. Both the victim and the accused belong to the same community.

The girl, who is the younger daughter of her parents, was hired as a maid by Maraiah’s family. Maraiah’s father has been bedridden and the victim was hired to take care of him.

On September 18, when she was in her room, Maraiah forced himself upon her. As he tried to rape her, she resisted. Later he sprinkled petrol and set her ablaze before fleeing away.

Later the accused's family informed the girl's parent about the incident. But due to severe burns, the girl could not speak.

On October 5, she recovered slightly and informed her parents about the incident, after which the matter came to light, and police were alerted. A case had been then registered at Khammam I town police station for an attempt to murder and POCSO act.
