15 exotic reptiles seized from two at Chennai airport

Chennai: Around 15 exotic reptiles were recovered from two air passengers in Chennai. The passengers, who arrived at the airport from Malaysia, were found in possession of exotic reptiles including juvenile pythons.

This came to light after officials maintaining a strict vigil came across two people who were behaving suspiciously. The officials searched the passengers after they received a tip that wild animals are likely being smuggled from Kuala Lumpur.

This duo was intercepted after officers of Air Intelligence Unit (AIU) noticed them moving suspiciously upon their arrival from Kuala Lumpur. After a thorough search and interrogation, the officials found that the passengers were in possession of exotic replies hidden in their stroller bags.

A total of seven different species, including green tree python and Blue Spotted tree monitor, were found hidden. The two men said that they were handed these reptiles by someone outside Kuala Lumpur airport and were asked to give it to someone here.

The officials then called in a team of veterinary doctors to inspect the creatures. The doctors found them to be healthy. The passengers were detained for further questioning and the seized reptiles will be sent back to Kuala Lumpur.
