15-ton rock falls on Dhoolpet house, no casualties

Hyderabad: A 15-ton rock fell on a house in Dhoolpet on 13 October but the family luckily managed to escape unhurt.

Around 10 a.m on Tuesday, Rajesh Singh and his family, residents of Rani Avanthi Bai Bhavan, Dhoolpet were preparing breakfast when the incident occurred. The family ran out of the house. “The incident occurred in the morning when my wife was preparing breakfast. She heard the noise and ran outside with the kid. I was out at the time. The rock crashed on the walls and ceiling of the house and damaged the kitchen,” said Mr. Singh.

The family has been living in the house for 15 years. Earlier, too, small rocks would fall on the house. “Due to heavy rain in the city, the rock dislodged from a hill and fell on the house. The disaster response team is helping us assess the risk of falling rocks in the area. We are also assessing the risk to other houses located on the hilltop Dilwar Ganj,” said Chandra Shekhar Reddy, the SI of Magalhat police station.

This is the second such incident in the past three days. On 11 October, two people died after a two-story building collapsed at Hussaini Alam in the city. Five people, including a two-year-old child, were injured in the incident. The injured have been shifted to Asara Hospital in Moghalpura and Osmania General Hospital. The victims have been identified as Farah Begum and Anees Begum.
