20 child labourers rescued in Balapur mandal, 5 persons arrested

Hyderabad: The Rachakonda police on Monday arrested five persons for trafficking child labourers from Bihar and rescued 20 children from bangle-making houses at Errakunta in Balapur police station limits.

Police, accompanied by A. Venkateswarlu, state coordinator of NGO Bachpan Bachao Andolan, Naresh, Childline coordinator and N. Nageshwar Rao, CWC member, Rangareddy district, conducted raids on three bangle-making houses near Pink Palace at Errakunta, in the presence of two mediators and rescued the children.

One Mano Devi, lured the parents of the children by giving them some money and telling them that employment would be shown to their wards. Taking advantage of their economic condition, the children were brought to the city and lodged in congested portions taken for rent by the bangle-making traders.

Police arrested five persons, including Mohammed Thoufiq, Mohammed Sarfaraz, Mohammed Mujahid and Imtiyaz.

The accused have been running the bangle-making units at Errakunta in Balapur mandal. The children were locked up in the houses and made to work from 6 am to 11 pm every day. They were not allowed to move freely, the police said.

Moreover, the food provided to them was unhygienic, the police added.
