70 journalists, third TRS MLA test positive for Covid-19 in Telangana

Hyderabad: A total of 70 journalists from Telangana tested positive for Covid-19, as of June 15. On Sunday, 23 journalists, who were involved in coverage of the Telangana Secretariat, tested positive for the virus. With this, the total number of Covid-19 cases in the state has crossed 5,000.

On June 7, a 36-year-old TV journalist had died of Covid-19 in the state, while on May 30, three cameramen and one senior journalist tested positive for the novel Coronavirus. All four were asymptomatic, according to the health officials.

Meanwhile, a TRS MLA has also been confirmed to be infected by the virus, making him the third legislator from the party with Covid-19. One of the other two legislators was infected on June 14 and is currently undergoing treatment in Hyderabad.

The other TRS MLA who tested positive for Covid-19 had infected four other contacts, including his wife, cook, driver and gunman. While the legislator was admitted to a private hospital in Hyderabad, his primary contacts were placed under home quarantine.

Speaking to NewsMeter about the TRS MLA getting infected, a senior police officer said, “The MLA last visited his constituency on June 2 to take part in the State Formation Day celebrations. He returned to Hyderabad on the same day. The legislator could have contracted the virus in Hyderabad because his constituency has not reported a single case so far.”

Meanwhile, Telangana has reported 237 new Covid-19 cases in a single day on June 14. Of them, 4,525 are local cases, while 449 patients are migrants and foreign returnees.

Further, Telangana reported three new deaths on Sunday taking the death toll in the state to 185. Meanwhile, the number of active cases in the state has reached 2,412. The state has discharged 2,377 Covid-19 cases as of June 14, with 25 people being let out on Sunday.
