Chittoor: Two persons died and over 30 were injured in a head-on collision between a private Volvo bus and an RTC bus near Kasimpeta on the Pulatapattu-Naidupet main road in Chittoor district of Andhra Pradesh in the morning hours of Wednesday.

The accident led to a massive traffic jam on the road for hours and the police and rescue teams struggled to bring down the injured persons from the buses. The injured were shifted to the various hospitals in Tirupati.

The police said over 36 pilgrims from Sabarimala of Kerala were heading for Tirupati in a Volvo bus for darshan of Lord Balaji. The bus collided with a Vijayawada-Kuppam RTC bus which was coming in the opposite direction near Kasimpeta at high speed.

The RTC bus driver Ramesh Kumar and one of his passengers, Prasad, died of severe head injuries.

The impact of the collision was so high that the front portion of the vehicles got mangled, trapping the passengers on the buses. The police and rescue teams used gas cutters to extricate the travellers. The mishap also brought the vehicular traffic on the road to a halt.

The police have registered a case and an investigation is on. The police said that the driver of the Volvo bus lost control of the vehicle before colliding with the other bus.
