AP DGP Gautam Sawang asked to appear before HC in illegal arrest case

Vijayawada: The Andhra Pradesh High Court has summoned DGP D. Gautam Sawang to appear in the court on 14 February in connection with a habeas corpus petition filed against the police for illegally arresting two people.

It may be recalled that the police allegedly arrested a couple, Reddi Gowtham and his wife Y. Lochini, from north Andhra in October. The police failed to produce the duo before the court. After examining the habeas corpus petition, the High Court had ordered a judicial inquiry and a senior civil judge of Vizag city was appointed to conduct an inquiry into the petition. The legal fraternity said the judge has completed the inquiry and submitted a report to the AP High Court.

An advocate, Ravi Teja, filed the habeas corpus petition following the illegal arrest of the couple. Later, two more advocates, Govinda Rao and Mohammed Ismail, supported the petition. However, the police tried to attack the advocates.

Based on the senior civil judge’s report, the AP High Court issued notices to the DGP of Andhra Pradesh to appear before the court on Friday and asked him to prepare a clarification with the relevant details.
