Apathetic boyfriend and rapist drive class IX girl to suicide in West Godavari

West Godavari: A class IX student was allegedly raped by a youngster in West Godavari district. What is more shocking in this case was, the victim's boyfriend drove her to committee suicide by insulting her. The victim, from T Narsapuram Mandal in West Godavari district, ended her life by consuming a pesticide-laced soft drink. Though the incident took place on December 9, it became known on December 16, after the girl’s father approached the police.

According to reports, the girl attended a spiritual programme in her village on December 7. While she was returning home, M Raju, a native of the same town, kidnapped her, took her to an isolated place and raped her.

The victim later narrated her ordeal to her boyfriend M Subrahmanyam on December 8. Instead of supporting her, Subrahmanyam insulted the girl and advised her to commit suicide, saying that losing virginity is a sin. Subrahmanyam also offered her the pesticide-laced soft drink.

Upset with the series of misfortunes in her life, the girl consumed the poisoned drink on December 9 before going to school. The poison began to take effect after she reached the school, and she collapsed while there.

People rushed her to a nearby private hospital at Jangareddigudum for first aid. The girl narrated the entire episode to her father, while at the hospital. However, she had to be taken to a government facility, and the girl breathed her last en route to the hospital in Guntur in late December 9.

Based on a complaint from the parents and relatives of the victim, West Godavari police registered a case against Raju on rape charges and Subrahmanyam for abetting suicide. Police launched a search for the Raju and Subrahmanyam, who had fled from the village after the girl’s parents approached the police.
