Auto driver gets lifer for raping a minor girl in Vizag

Visakhapatnam: A local court in Visakhapatnam on Thursday sentenced an auto-rickshaw driver, Perla Appa Rao (30), to life imprisonment for kidnapping and raping a minor girl. The court also sentenced the perpetrator’s friend, G Nalamaha Raju (27), to three years in jail for assisting, alongside announcing Rs 3 lakh compensation to the survivor.

Appa Rao and Raju picked up the girl from a bus stand near Steel Plant area in Vizag. The class VIII student was taken to an isolated location where Rao raped her. However, the girl managed to escape and rushed to her home, where she narrated the entire ordeal.

The judge of the First Additional Metropolitan Session Court, VV Srinivas Murthy, found the accused guilty after listening to witness statements and observing the evidence.

Special Public Prosecutor M Venu Gopala Rao said that the court found Appa Rao, a resident of Gangavaram area in Vizag, guilty of kidnapping and raping a 14-year-old girl. Moreover, the court also announced an “appropriate compensation” to the rape survivor under Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act.

The AP government will give compensation to the girl within one month, the public prosecutor said. The court also imposed an additional fine of Rs 17,000 on Rao. Out of which, Rs 16,000 is to be paid to the mother of the victim.
