Be aware of fraudulent lotteries: warns Cyberabad police

Hyderabad: The Cyber Crime Police Station, Cyberabad in recent times have received many complaints of Lottery Frauds in the name of ‘Kaun Banega Crorepati’.

Aiming to protect Hyderabad’s citizens from such fraudulent lotteries, Cyberabad police is trying to create awareness among those who have an affinity for lotteries or prizes posted on social media platforms and messaging services.

Explaining these cyber fraudsters’ modus operandi Cyberabad police informs that they operate mainly from Bihar and Uttar Pradesh and send bulk messages to the public. These messages communicate that the receiver’s mobile number has won an amount of Rs 25,00,000 in the Kaun Banega Crorepati lottery. If anyone replies to the messages, the scammers would ask the person to make a large initial payment in the name of registration fees, Income Tax, GST, service charges, etc. to receive the prize money.

Cyberabad police have advised the public to take precautionary measures to prevent such frauds.

—Do not respond to bulk messages/SMSs about any lotteries from unknown senders.

—Be sceptical and do not abide by their request to share your bank/card/wallet details.

—Discuss with friends and family before transferring the money. Do it as an exercise before transmitting money to unknown individuals.
