CBI to probe 15-year-old Kurnool students rape and murder case

Hyderabad: In a fresh development, the Andhra Pradesh government declared that the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) will investigate the rape and alleged murder of the 15-year-old Kurnool student. The government transferred the case to the CBI under Section 6 of the Delhi Special Police Establishment Act of 1946.

On August 19, 2017, the 15-year-old student was found dead in her hostel room in Cattamanchi Ramalinga Reddy Residential High School located on the outskirts of Kurnool. The school authorities called her parents saying their daughter was sick but when the parents came to the school, they found their daughter hanging from the ceiling fan.

The student belongs to the Scheduled Tribe community.

Initially, it was believed that she had committed suicide, but later the parents protested and called for a judicial probe alleging that their daughter had said that she was sexually abused by two men in the school. Later, police found evidence of sexual abuse but nobody was arrested.

The incident hit the spotlight after the Disha rape and murder case and the parents of the Kurnool student asked why justice in their case was being delayed.
