Chemist charred to death after massive fire engulfs Visakha Solvents Ltd  in Vizag

Vishakapatanam : A 40-year-old chemist was charred to death and another person suffered injuries when a major fire broke out at Visakha Solvents Ltd in Jawaharlal Nehru Pharma City (JNPC), Parawada.

Identified as Kandregula Srinivasa Rao, he hailed from Anakapalle Town in Vizag city. The body of Srinivasa Rao was found on Tuesday morning near the plant. The injured person has been identified as Mallesh. He has been shifted to a private hospital in the city.

Visakha District Collector V Vinay Chand and City Police Chief RK Meena said that the fire mishap took place at the recovery unit of Visakha Solvents Ltd.

It may be recalled that there were a series of blasts when samples were being collected from a reactor around 10.30 pm on Monday.

Vinay Chand said that fire broke out in one of the columns during the recovery process. The huge flames were confined to Visakha Solvents Ltd only.

Police said that there were four people at the site when the mishap took place. Initially, the officials said that all the four ran to safety. Only Mallesh suffered burn injuries. However, on Tuesday, police found the body of chemist Srinivasa Rao near the accident spot.

Over eight fire tenders were pressed into service and the situation was brought under control after hours of arduous efforts by the fire service personnel.

Panic gripped the people as the explosions were heard in a radius of two kilometers area on Monday night. Plumes of smoke filled the air after the incident.

This is the third major industrial accident in Vizag city during the past two and a half months. On May 7, a major gas leak at LG Polymers India Pvt Ltd (LGPI) left 12 people dead and 600 hospitalized. Another mishap occurred at Sainor Life Sciences Pharma Company at JNPC on June 30.
