Consumed by fear of COVID-19, man ends life by jumping into Hussain Sagar

Hyderabad: Fearing that he had contracted the corona virus, a migrant labourer, identified as 34-year-old Paltupan, committed suicide by jumping into the Hussain Sagar lake here. The police found his body after two days of extensive search operations.

Paltupan, a jewelry shop employee, is originally from Howrah in West Bengal. He was living in the Doodh Bowli area in Hyderabad along with his three-year-old kid and his wife. He had recently developed a fever, cold, and respiratory ailments, symptoms common to the corona virus. He had decided to get tested at a private hospital.

The man's family and friends told the police that the private hospital staff had refused to admit him. Paltupan was consumed by the fear of the virus. Someone then suggested he visit the Gandhi Hospital. "It was on the way to Gandhi Hospital on Friday, when they were passing by Hussain Sagar, that he asked his friend to stop the car so he could get some fresh air," inspector B. Dhanalaxmi, the SHO of Lake police station, said.

While his friend sat in the car, counting the money required for Paltupan's treatment, he heard the sound of someone falling into the lake. "By the time Paltupan's friend realised what had happened and informed the police,

the former had already drowned," the inspector added.

The police found Paltupan's body on Sunday morning after two days and handed it over to the family.
