Coronavirus: Cognizant to pay employees 25 per cent more next month

Hyderabad: The US-based tech giant Cognizant has announced that it will pay 25 per cent more in basic pay to more than two-thirds of its employees in India in April. The software company has announced this as a "sign of gratitude" towards its employees for working during the COVID-19 pandemic. Employees up to associate-level in India and the Philippines will be eligible for this additional payment.

In an email to the employees, CEO of Cognizant, Brian Humphries, said, “Despite this turbulence, which affects both you and your families, you have risen to the challenge of serving our clients with empathy, initiative, integrity, and courage—all while supporting and uplifting one another. I am deeply grateful to all of you for your daily acts of heroic leadership.”

The company had, earlier, enabled work from home for a majority of its offshore teams to ensure employee health and safety.

An employee associated with Cognizant in Pune said this was a welcome move. “Pay increase is always a positive thing, as far as employees are concerned. It will help us work more effectively from home. But, in the wake of global recession and economic slowdown in view of the COVID-19 pandemic, it is not necessarily good for the company, in terms of revenue,” he said.
