Hyderabad: In an alleged case of honour killing, a couple killed their pregnant daughter in the Jogulamba Gadwal district in Telangana. The parents were angry when they discovered that she was in a relationship with a boy from a lower caste. The girl belonged to the Vyshya community and the boy was from the Boya community.
The victim, Divya, 20, who hailed from Kallukuntla village under Manopad mandal in the district, was studying at a private college in the neighboring Kurnool district of Andhra Pradesh. During this time, she fell in love with a boy.
Divya had come home due to the COVID-19 lockdown. A couple of days ago, Veeramma noticed that her daughter was pregnant and informed her husband Bhaskaraiah. The couple beat her up and demanded that she get an abortion. However, Divya did not give in to her parents’ demands. But later, she told them her boyfriend’s name and when they found out that he belonged to a lower caste, they became furious. When she said she'd marry him, they felt humiliated and said they'd lose respect in the village.
The angry parents later smothered her with a pillow when she was sleeping. They also strangled her till she died. On Monday, they told people that Divya had died of ill health and tried to dispose of the body. The village revenue officials came to know of the girl's death and alerted the police. Initially, a case of suspicious death was registered but after investigation, it was changed to a murder case.
During interrogations, the parents confessed to killing Divya. The duo was arrested and sent to judicial remand. The police have identified the boy as a resident of Kurnool district.
