COVID fear drives veterinarian to die by suicide in Nizamabad

Hyderabad: Fear of contracting Covid-19 drove a veterinarian to end his life in Nizamabad district, Telangana. Dr D. Santosh, 43, was found dead in his house on Friday morning. It was learnt that for the past few days, he had isolated himself from his family members fearing that he was infected. Police found that he was worried that he would contract the virus, as he was moving in public places regularly on official work.

According to Nizamabad police, Santosh, along with his wife and two children, has been living at Mubarak Nagar in the town. On official duty and other engagements, he has been visiting the local market area. Further, following the incessant rains, he has been inspecting fields and areas affected due to the rain.

During his field visits, he has been in contact with several persons and this increased his worry. Finally, he isolated himself and distanced himself from his family members.

On Friday morning, when he did not come out from his room, his wife knocked the door and but there was no response. Later, she found him dead in the room and alerted the neighbours and police.

Based on a complaint from his wife, Radha, police registered a case and began investigation. This is the first-of-its-kind incident where a government servant became victim to Covid scare. At least 10 people, ended their life in different parts of Telangana due to fear of contracting the virus.
