COVID patients son attacked Jr doc at Hyd hospital for denying discharge

Hyderabad : An attendant of a COVID-19 suspect, admitted to isolation ward of Osmania General Hospital (OGH) attacked a post graduation doctor, on Tuesday afternoon. This resulted in junior doctors and medical staff protest at the Superintendent’ office.

On April 14th, Tension brew at room no 116 , located on the hospital’s 2nd floor, when a patient 's son slapped a post graduate doctor Nikhil on duty. According to the doctors, the patient tested positive in the first test while the reports for the second is awaited. However the family has been insisting for discharge, which is not possible since the reports are pending. While PG doctor Nikhil was on duty treating the patient, furious son (attender) slapped the doctor, resulting in him bleeding from his ear.

The Telangana Junior Doctors Association sat in protest demanding special force to be deployed at OGH in order to protect the doctors.

A doctor ( name withheld ) told NewsMeter, “ Currently there are 10 COVID suspects admitted to the OGH isolated ward. The beds are placed with less distance between each other due to space constraints. Many patients are anxicous over the delay of reports. For example, if one patient is declared COVID position today, the other report of another takes 3 days’.

He further adds, “ The report of the COVID patient has caused panic among the rest. We need more beds and medical facilities and protection so that this incidents don't repeat’.

It is to note that Gandhi Hospital is the nodal center for COVID-19 patients however due to the overflowing number of suspects, a few are being treated at OGH.

An oral complaint has been filed at the Afzalgung police station. However no case has been registered against the attendant.
