Hyderabad engineering student arrested for mobile thefts

Hyderabad: A student of TKR College of Engineering and Technology Hyderabad, who was involved in a series of mobile thefts in the college and other places in the last one month, was arrested by police at Meerpet on Saturday.

Mohd Mahboob Ali, a resident of Saidabad in the city, was studying second year in college, but due to attitude problems, he was rusticated from the college. Police recovered three stolen mobile phones from his possession.

According to police, Mahboob was addicted to smoking and liquor. As he belonged to a financially poor family, he used to depend on friends for his luxuries. But as he entered engineering for higher studies, he felt shameful to constantly ask for money. That is when he decided to earn a fast-buck than go in for borrowings.

One day while he was at the college, he noticed a student leaving his mobile while leaving the class. Taking advantage, he stole the mobile. After selling it, he stole another mobile.

He also targetted passers-by from whom he asked for their mobile to make an emergency call to his family. On being given the phone, while pretending to be talking he would flee from the spot along with the mobile phone.

Even as he was planning to commit more offences, police increased surveillance at the college and in the surrounding areas, where mobile thefts and snatchings were reported. After watching CCTV footage, they identified Mahboob and waited to nab him. On Saturday when he was set for another offence, Meerpet police teams nabbed him. He admitted to committing thefts.
