Degree student ends life over cricket betting

A youth unable to bear the torture from cricket betting organisers, committed suicide at Borabanda in Hyderabad on Thursday.

The victim was identified as Ravi, 21 a student at a private college in Kukatpally. In his suicide note, Ravi said that the cricket betting organisers were pressurising him to additional money to what he had already paid. The incident took place on August 3 but came to light on Thursday. It also exposes how the betting mafia in the city prey on young students and lure them.

Ravi was lured into cricket betting by one Rajashekar and had betted in the recently concluded cricket World Cup 2019 and lost Rs 80,000. Rajashekar pressurised Ravi to pay the amount immediately. Unable to pay the amount, Ravi approached his father and lied to him saying that he had injured a person in an accident and needed money for treatment. Ravi’s father sold a piece of land and gave his Rs 40,000, which Ravi paid to Rajashekar. But Rajashekar wanted the full amount and pressurised Ravi to pay the balance Rs 40,000 also. Unable to arrange the amount, and ask his parents again, Ravi committed suicide at his home.

Police recovered the suicide note and registered a case against Rajashekar on charges of harassing Ravi.
