Dump NPR activity, Chennithala urges LDF govt

Kochi: The Congress-led United Democratic Front (UDF) Opposition has slammed the CPI (M)-led Left Democratic Front (LDF) government for going ahead with collection of details for renewing the National Population Registry (NPR) at this juncture.

Opposition leader Ramesh Chennithala said in the State capital that the move of Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan to go ahead with NPR works while opposing the controversial Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) was tantamount to cheating the people.

“The West Bengal government has stopped activities related to NPR, which is considered the first step towards National Citizen Registry (NCR). Given its double-standards, the State Government here owes an immediate explanation to the people in this regard,” Chennithala said.

He said that the General Administration Department (GAD) issued the order to proceed with renewal works of NPR on November 12 and the works related to it are scheduled to be undertaken in April and May.

“Saying one thing and doing the opposite is the hallmark of this government. It is sabotage. We, in fact, decided to join the LDF in the agitation against CAA considering the seriousness of the issue,” said Ramesh.

Chennithala said that if there was any sincerity, the government should give up the present move on NPR,” he said.
