Eleven killed, several trapped in crane mishap in Hindustan Shipyard

Vishakapatnam : Ten persons were killed and few others were injured after a 75 metric tons heavy-duty-crane collapsed at the Hindustan Shipyard Limited (HSL) in Vizag city of Andhra Pradesh. The incident took place on Saturday morning while the staff of the HSL were examining the load test. The crane was purchased by the HSL around a decade ago for various works at the Shipyard.

According to the Police, At the time of the incident, more than 20 people were working near the Crane. The police and emergency services have pressed in teams to rescue the trapped persons. So, far the rescue teams have retrieved one body, while efforts are on to retrieve all.

The deceased were identified as supervisor K Prasad, Ramana, Satya Raju of HSL Electrical section and K Jagan of HSL maintenance department, technician P Naga Demudu, P Bhaskar of Lead Engineers Company, technicians R Venkata Rao, Siva Kumar and Chaitanya of Green Field Company and crane operator TV Ratnam. Officials are verifying the names of others.

The HSL was established in Vizag city around seven decades ago due to the strategic location of Vizag. Since, January 2016, HSL has undergone a major turnaround and posted operating and net profits for the past four consecutive years after a gap of over six decades.

The HSL authorities yet issue a statement in regard to the incident.The crane has been operating by an outsourcing agency for the past few months. The police are yet to establish the identity of the deceased and injured persons in the incident. Sources said that among the deceased, some were employees of HSL while few were contract employees.
