Ex-BJP MLA Kuldeep Sengar sentenced to life imprisonment

New Delhi: A Delhi Court sentenced ex-BJP MLA Kuldeep Sengar to life imprisonment after it found him guilty of rape in connection with the Unnao rape case. He was convicted for sections 376 of IPC, and sections 5C and 6 of POCSO.

The CBI court also imposed a fine of Rs 25 lakh on Sengar. As per the order, a copy of which is with NewsMeter, Rs 10 lakh goes to the victim and Rs 15 lakh for prosecution expenses.

The Court ordered that the victim girl and her family should continue to reside in the rented accommodation for one year. The efforts of social workers of the Delhi Commission of Women (DCW) made available the rented accommodation to them. “The State of Uttar Pradesh shall pay or reimburse the rental charges of Rs 15,000 per month to the landlord for one year with effect from December 1, 2019, to 30.11.2020.

Sengar had allegedly kidnapped and raped the Unnao woman back in 2017 when she was a minor. Bharatiya Janata Party expelled Sengar, the party’s four-time MLA, in August 2019.

On August 9, 2019, Court framed charges against Sengar under Sections 120B (criminal conspiracy), 363 (kidnapping), 366 (kidnapping or inducing a woman to compel for marriage), 376 (rape), and relevant sections of the POCSO Act.

On July 28 this year, the victim received severe injuries after a truck hit the car in which she was travelling. Two aunts of the victim died in the crash.

As per the orders of the court, the woman and her family have been currently provided CRPF security. They have now been shifted to rented accommodation in Delhi with the assistance of the Delhi Commission for Women (DCW).
