T excise officials attacked during raids on desi liquor operators, 3 injured

Hyderabad: An inspector and at least two constables of the Excise department were attacked and assaulted in Telangana's Mahabubnagar district on 3 May when they went to raid a village where desi liquor (saarai) was being manufactured. Excise minister V. Srinivas Goud visited the injured personnel at Mahabubnagar district hospital.

Due to the ban on liquor in view of the lockdown, there is a high demand for desi liquor being manufactured in rural areas. Even those who had quit making the liquor started brewing it again due to the increased demand, especially in rural villages.

One such unit was operating on the outskirts of Jadcherla town in the district. Based on a tip-off, the Excise teams conducted raids. However, some workers at the site obstructed their movement and also assaulted the unarmed officials with sticks.

Minister Srinivas Goud said the attackers will be identified and strict action will be taken against them.
