Fact Check: Morphed photo shows police protesting against lathi-charge

Hyderabad: A photograph of policemen protesting against the lathi-charge on innocent people has gone viral on social media. The photo shows a cop holding a poster that reads, "We cannot lathi-charge innocent people".

Many social media users have shared the image on Facebook and Twitter. One Twitter user posted the image and wrote, "Police doesn't lathi-charge. The government does."

FACT CHECK:

NewsMeter performed a reverse image search and found an article by India Today from November 2019 that had published the same image. However, in this photo, the words on the poster reads "We want Justice".

Other reports by News Nation and Asian Net Newsable had also carried the same photo.

This protest was against the manhandling of some cops by lawyers. "Armed with banners and placards, the protesting cops raised slogans outside the police headquarters, requesting their seniors to come out and stand in their support," the report by India Today read.

This proves that the image has been morphed to promote a false narrative. Hence, the claim is FALSE.
