Hyderabad: A photo reportedly showing BJP goons beating up police personnel in West Bengal has gone viral on social media.

A Twitter user shared the photo and, in a sarcastic tone, wrote, "BJP goons in Bengal assisting an elderly policeman".

FACT CHECK:

This claim is FALSE.

NewsMeter performed a reverse image search and found a report by Daily Mail from June 2017. It said during a riot an angry mob had attacked police officers after a teenage schoolgirl was allegedly raped in a hospital's intensive care unit. The report includes the photo of the man seen attacking the police in the viral image.

We also found another report by the Sun that also had the same image. This incident took place in Kanpur, Uttar Pradesh.

We also found a video by India TV that had broadcast the riot and also said the incident took place in Uttar Pradesh.

Lastly, this image has been viral on social media with different claims and has been debunked several times by news organisations.

Hence, the claim that the viral photo shows BJP goons beating up cops in Bengal is FALSE.
