FACT CHECK: Viral video of egg hitting French President Macron is from 2017 election campaign

Hyderabad: A video showing an egg hitting French President Emmanuel Macron is viral on social media.

The incident is being linked to the President's recent remarks defending free speech following the death a high school teacher who was decapitated by a radical Islamist.

Many social media users shared this clip and wrote that Macron was egged recently for his comments.

FACT CHECK:

The claim that Macron was hit by an egg recently is false.

NewsMeter performed a keyword search and found media reports carrying similar videos of the event that were shot from a different angle. A report by Express and Associated Press from 2017, says Macron was attacked by a protester with an egg when he was attending an agriculture show, Salon International de l'Agriculture, in Paris in March 2017.6

We found a similar clip uploaded in March 2017, by L'Express with the title "Emmanuel Macron receives an egg at the Agricultural Show". It was also reported ETV Telangana.

The incident took place when Macron was running for president. He was on a campaign trail when the incident occurred in April 2017.

Evidently, the claim is false.
