Hyderabad: A video of police officials performing aarti (a religious ritual) of alleged lockdown violators on the road is viral on social media.

According to the video, the police officials performed aarti of people who violated the lockdown. The post was shared by a Facebook user stating that the Karnataka High Court had said that the police should not beat the people who violate the lockdown. Therefore, the police performed aarti and let the people go.

Fact Check

The claim made through the video is false. This is an old video.

We firstly performed a keyword search, which directed us to the YouTube channel of The Khabardar News. The video was first aired on the channel on April 12, 2020.

The video stated that the police officials of Rewa, Madhya Pradesh had started a new initiative in order to make the violators of the lockdown understand the importance and safety of life. Rewa police officials were seen doing the aarti of people who were not wearing masks, going out unnecessarily during the lockdown and not wearing helmets.

We then found a Facebook account 'Bhopal' that had shared a similar video on April 11, 2020. The video was shared with a caption: "Rewa MP, Madhya Pradesh Police lockdown todne walon ki aarti utaar rahi hai Rewa MP#KeepSharing #MyBhopal."

A report by Naiduniya.com had also reported the same. In order to make the violators follow the guidelines of the lockdown, Rewa police had launched a unique initiative. Police officials performed aarti, apply tilak, coconut, and flowers.

Evidently, the claim that the Karnataka police had performed aarti of lockdown violators is false. The video is old and from Rewa, Madhya Pradesh.
