Hyderabad: An Amazon link claiming that the e-commerce giant is providing free gifts to 100 random users on the occasion of its 30th anniversary has gone viral on social media.
NewsMeter found that the link is fake and that no such offer is being provided by Amazon.
Fact Check:
We clicked on the link and were redirected to an Amazon page. However, we noticed that it did not look like the official Amazon pages. The menu option did not work either.
Next, despite the notice that said only 100 winners will be selected, the survey could be taken over and over again and at every round, it followed the same pattern and a winner was announced at every second chance of the trail.
Third, it asks the survey users to enter their address and to share the link to their WhatsApp groups in order to receive the prize. This pattern has been noticed in several scams. Scams like this take information of users and hack their electronic devices. It connects the link to the IP address of the user and is a common method in hacking and stealing information.
We called Amazon customer service and they confirmed that no such offer has been announced by the organization and that the link is FAKE. They have warned people to beware and contact them in case they receive any such fake links.
Hence, the viral link is a HOAX.
