Fact Check: There is no WHO list with Top Ten killer foods

Hyderabad: A post with a visual graphic of the top ten foods certified deadly by the World Health Organization (WHO) has gone viral on social media.

The logo of the WHO is also on the graphic. It is also mentioned that eight of the ten killer foods are found in the Philippines.

Fact Check

The claim made through the viral post is false.

NewsMeter tried to find this viral list on the official site of World Health Organization (WHO) but found nothing.

However, we did find a tweet dated 17 June 2016 on the WHO Western Pacific Twitter handle refuting the viral claim in this tweet. The tweet said, "WHO has never released a list of 10 killer foods."

The WHO had further stated in the tweet that they do encourage a healthy diet. We found a report published by the WHO on 29 April, 2020.

It is also understood that mainstream media usually picks up such advisory from organizations such as the WHO. However, we did not find any such reports published by the media.

It is therefore evident that the WHO has not issued any such advisory. The viral claim has been doing rounds since 2016.
