Female ragpicker seriously injured as plastic container explodes at Meerpet in Hyderabad

Hyderabad: A 25-year-old female ragpicker suffered serious injuries after a discarded plastic container exploded at Meerpet in Hyderabad on Friday morning. The blast sparked panic in the neighbourhood.
The police cordoned off the mishap site and rushed in the bomb disposal squad to determine the cause of the blast.
According to the police, N Nirmala of Saidabad and two other women were collecting plastic waste from a garbage dump at Meerpet. Nirmala picked a plastic box and banged it on a stone on the footpath to forcefully open it.
However, the box exploded with a loud noise, grievously injuring Female ragpicker Nirmala. It appeared her left ankle was shattered due to the impact. The unconscious woman was first taken to a private hospital and then admitted to Osmania General Hospital.
The police suspect the container had some chemical that had not been stored in proper condition. It went off after Female ragpicker Nirmala applied force on it, said sources. A case has been registered.
