FIR filed against Maniratnam and 49 celebrities

Chennai: Popular filmmaker Maniratnam, who is set to begin shooting for his dream project ‘Pooniyin Selvan’, has been named in a FIR filed in Bihar's Muzaffarpur on Thursday. Maniratnam is among the 49 celebrities who have been named in FIR, following an open letter to Prime Minister Narendra Modi raising concerns over the growing incidents of mob killing.

Sources say that in July this year, celebrities wrote a letter against the rise of mob lynching across the country.

A petition was filed by an advocate Sudhir Kumar Ojhain in Muzaffarpur Bihar. Advocate Sudhir Kumar Ojhain through his letter said that the group of celebrities have tarnished the image of the country and undermined the impressive performance of the Prime Minister. Besides, they are also supporting secessionist tendencies.

The police said the FIR was lodged under Indian Penal Code sections, including those relating to sedition, public nuisance, hurting religious feelings and insulting with an intent to provoke breach of peace.

Maniratnam who made his debut in Tamil in early 1980s shot to fame with ‘Nayagan’ starring Kamal Haasan. His Telugu directorial ‘Geethanjalai’ starring Nagarjuna was popular.
