Former President Pranab Mukherjee dies at 84

New Delhi: The former president of India Pranab Mukherjee passed away in the evening hours of Monday, August 31. He was admitted at Delhi's RR Hospital when he breathed his last.

The confirmation comes from his son, Abhijit Mukherjee, who tweeted that his father has passed away despite the best efforts from doctors at the RR Hospital. He further thanked citizens for praying for his father.



Pranab Mukherjee was on ventilator support ever since he was admitted to the hospital earlier this month. He was reportedly undergoing a lung infection. Since a brain surgery that took place early August, the former president has been in a coma.

He had tested positive for COVID-19 on August 10th, which he had announced on Twitter. He was a senior leader of the Indian National Congress, and has served as the President of India from 2012-2017.

Mukherjee has previously held several ;ortfolios in the central government, notably the Union Finance Minister (2009-12). In 2019, he was awarded the Bharat Ratna by President Ram Nath Kovind.

He is said to have been Indira Gandhi's most trusted cabinet member. He also served as the leader of the house in Rajya Sabha from 1980 to 1985.

Several politicians and public figures expressed their grief and offered condolences to Mukherjee's family.





On August 10 itself, the former president had suffered a fall at his house in New Delhi. Ever since an operation to remove a blood clot, his health, reportedly, had been critical.
