He had tested positive for COVID-19 on August 10th, which he had announced on Twitter. He was a senior leader of the Indian National Congress, and has served as the President of India from 2012-2017.
Mukherjee has previously held several ;ortfolios in the central government, notably the Union Finance Minister (2009-12). In 2019, he was awarded the Bharat Ratna by President Ram Nath Kovind.
He is said to have been Indira Gandhi’s most trusted cabinet member. He also served as the leader of the house in Rajya Sabha from 1980 to 1985.
