Hyderabad: Going by the finalised reserved posts of 13 municipal corporations and 123 municipalities across Telangana, the next mayor of Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation could be a woman.

On January 5, the state government issued orders finalising reservations for municipal corporations and municipalities in Telangana. The polling for which would be held on January 22. Though GHMC is not going to polls on the same day, the government finalised its reservation alongside other municipal corporations, as GHMC elections are due for early 2021.

The government reserved mayor posts in seven municipal corporations, including GHMC, Karimnagar, Khammam, Boddupal, Badangpet, Nizampet, and Peerzadiguda to open category candidates. Of these, four should be reserved for women by conducting a draw of lots. If GHMC is selected in the draw, the mayor post could go for a woman from the open category.

Among municipal chairpersons’ posts in 123 municipalities, the officials reserved four seats for STs, 17 for SCs, 40 for BCs and 62 were allocated to open category.

While the notification for municipal polls will be released on January 7, elections for 120 municipalities and 10 municipal corporations will be held on January 22. The results will be announced on January 25. Elections to GHMC, Warangal, and Khammam will come after January 22, as their five-year terms are yet to complete.
