Guntur man accuses police of torturing him for defying lockdown, commits suicide

Vijayawada: A 25-year-old man committed suicide in Guntur allegedly over police abuse. P. Srinivas Rao hanged himself from a tree near Bapatla in Andhra Pradesh's Guntur district. He posted a selfie video before ending his life, blaming the police for his death.

Srinivas, a resident of Kaikaluru in Krishna district, was an employee of a private firm in Tirupati. On 1 April, despite a lockdown, he was returning to his hometown from Tirupati on his motorbike. The Prakasam district police tried to intercept him but Srinivas did not stop his motorbike. However, the police noted the vehicle number and informed the Guntur police who arrested Srinivas for defying the lockdown orders and seized his vehicle.

According to sources, the police tortured Srinivas. Upset with the attitude of the police, he committed suicide by hanging himself from a tree. In the video he made before killing himself, Srinivas said the police abused and tortured him and said they were was responsible for his death. His family is staging a protest, demanding action against the police for his death.
