Haritha Haram saplings: Gram Panchayati fines shepherd Rs 1,000

Hyderabad: The Gram Panchayati Secretary has imposed a fine of Rs 1,000 on a shepherd for letting his sheep eat Haritha Haram saplings. The incident took place at Surya Naik Thanda, Chivvemla mandal in Suryapet district. The owner on Tuesday paid the fine and collected his sheep from the custody of Gram Panchayati.

The Haritha Haram scheme has put sheep owners and cattle rearers on alert as the gram panchayats are taking serious action. Recently, Narayanapet Panchayati slapped a fine of Rs 10,000 on a goatherd for damaging Haritha Haram saplings.

The TRS government has introduced Haritha Haram to increase the green cover in the state from 24 per cent to 33 per cent. Forest department runs 496 nurseries in the state taking care of 92 lakh saplings. District Rural Development wing protects 2.2 crore saplings planted under Haritha Haram scheme.

The TRS government is implementing the fifth phase of Haritha Haram in the state. It has set a target of planting 100 crore saplings in 2019.
